I'm a 65 year old musician and singer, I used to play in bands but I'm now only really into home recording. I was told of Norfolk Mastering by a musician friend and decided to ask them to master my album project, just to see what happened really. Well, I couldn't be happier with the results. Communication is excellent, Robert is very helpful in his suggestions and advice, but without trying to persuade you to accept something you don't want to. The finished master is a joy to listen to, it sounds the same as my original mixes, but somehow balanced and polished in a way I hadn't achieved, also, it's much louder than my original, but also smoother, not harsh or compressed, I think this might be down to the use of some high-end analogue outboard gear. The price was very reasonable and the whole process was really easy, being carried out over a couple of weeks, entirely on-line. I will certainly be mastering with Robert next time.
In the second half of 2017 I was working on my sixth CD, but the studio I usually used was being refurbished, and so a friend suggested I might try Robert Campbells set up at Norfolk Mastering.When I met Robert I was impressed by his ability to achieve exactly what was required, because not only did he listen to the music intently but also how I explained I wanted it to sound.The first stumbling block we had, was my use of Mac software Garageband! To get the best quality, Garageband produces files that have to be saved as AIFF, these files are not ideal for use in other programmes. This did not phase Robert because he managed to convert them into WAV files, without a fuss or loss of quality. Part of the Album was recorded as a field recording, and was a dedication to a departed friend. Robert even managed to clean up and make coherent a terrible quality Mp3 file, with loads of background noise recorded at Glastonbury festival 2005, which I insisted on using.I had given us a deadline to work too , and as I was on holiday when it came to mixing, I was bit apprehensive about not being present. The mixing is such an important part of the process, and only having contact by email was not ideal. I need not have worried as Roberts ability was quite amazing and any details I was not too sure about, were soon amended. As the artist, when you spend so much time recording the body of work, and living with it, sometimes you can not see the wood for the trees! The speed at which Robert worked was great; I am very impatient and have often got frustrated with people and processes in the past, but this did not happen at all. I got more frustrated with myself not being able to make decisions quick enough, to help Robert get on with the job.I wanted as few gaps between songs as possible, some even overlaping and this was done, and in some cases managed to work better than I imagined. When I got the finished mastered album back from the manufacturer, I was so happy. The 15 songs on the record are far from the best songs I have written, as they were songs from my past, but as a complete CD I think it is my best yet. I feel that this is down to Roberts ability to mix and master. The clarity produced at Norfolk Mastering is second to none and I will most certainly be using Robert again very soon.
